Frequently asked questions

Last updated: 17. 9. 2026

01What is Smart City Explorer?

An educational app about smart cities, local government and participation. You go through modules and lessons, each ends with a quiz, and you earn coins (Smart City Coins) for completing it.

02Who is it for?

Primary and secondary school pupils, university students and the general public. The content depends on the school and year in your profile.

03Is the app free?

Yes, the app is free and ad-free, on the App Store and Google Play.

04How do coins and rewards work?

You earn coins (Smart City Coins) for completed lessons, quizzes and challenges and redeem them for rewards in the app. Coins have no monetary value and cannot be transferred to another account. Children under 16 need the consent of a parent or legal guardian to exchange coins for physical rewards.

05How can a school join?

Smart City Explorer is always free for schools and joining requires no contract with the school.

  • The school administrator is invited to the admin by the Smart City Explorer team or by their municipality.
  • Teachers are invited by the school administrator; they create classes and assignments.
  • Pupils join a class with a class code or a link from their teacher.
  • At the end of the school year pupils move up a year — the app offers the new year and they confirm it.
  • Parents — the app is free and ad-free and processes only the data needed for education. Details are in the Privacy policy; a legal guardian can delete the child’s account at any time in the parent portal or in the parent account in the app.

Want your school to join? Write to info@smartcityexplorer.sk.

06I'm a parent – how do the parent account and consent work?

A parent can create a parent account directly in the app (option “I am a parent”) or on the web portal admin.smartcityexplorer.sk/rodic.

  • When consent is needed — children under 16 can use the app normally (modules, lessons, quizzes, polls) without consent. Consent of a legal guardian is needed only to exchange collected coins for physical rewards, because that is when we process the child's name, surname and delivery address. Without consent the account is not deleted; only coin redemption and entering a delivery address are blocked.
  • How to give consent — if your child enters your e-mail at registration, we send you a single-use link valid for 14 days. After clicking it you confirm that you are the child's legal guardian and grant or refuse consent. You can also grant consent directly in your parent account.
  • Linking with your child — happens automatically if your child entered your e-mail and you verified it. Otherwise your child generates a one-time 8-character code in the app (Profile → Link with parent), valid for 48 hours, and you enter it under “Add child”.
  • What you can do in the parent account — you see your child's progress and consent status. You can withdraw consent at any time, download your child's data (JSON export), unlink the child, or permanently delete your child's account as well as your own.

Details are in the Privacy policy.

07How can a town or city join?

Municipalities join by invitation from the Smart City Explorer team — write to info@smartcityexplorer.sk and the administrator receives an invitation link to the admin. Details are on the For municipalities page.

  • Free — municipal profile with logo and website link, administrator + 1 seat in the admin, overview of schools in the area, statistics for the last 90 days and one “My city” module from a template (text + 1 image).
  • Plus — more admin seats, full statistics history with period comparison, weekly e-mail digest, CSV export, unlimited assignments and modules, and PDF reports for the council. Plus city from €19.95/month, Plus region from €49/month (excl. VAT).

08Which languages are supported?
